Oil Fouling of HVAC/R systems heat-transfer surfaces will cause approximate efficiency losses of 7% in year one, 5% in year two and 2% per year the following years. Performance can be degraded by as much as 30% and higher due to the buildup of lubricants on internal surfaces.
Additionally, increased wear and tear due to poor lubrication leads to hotter operating temperatures which in turn accelerate friction and wear and tear. Even though oil fouling is the main problem, there are additional issues related to system performance degradation.
Routine service and maintenance are crucial for the operation and longevity of the HVAC unit but they do not restore the lost capacity inherent with all HVAC-R units.
Poor Heat Transfer
Degraded system performance: Evaporator and condenser cannot transfer adequate heat due to oil fouling and compromised internal heat exchangers.
Lost Efficiency
Over time the units lose efficiency due to wear and tear, oil migration, reduced heat transfer in the evaporator and condenser forcing the unit to run longer and less efficiently costing you more to operate. Replacing the unit is not economical.
Strained Compressor
Due to heat buildup and normal wear and tear the compressor works harder to overcome the loss in overall efficiency.
Shorter Compressor Life
Accelerated wear and tear, increased pressure, reduced performance. The compressor works much harder to achieve set temperatures causing premature and devastating failures.
